Lower School Spanish

Today's post focuses on the activities second and fourth graders have been doing recently in Spanish class: learning how to tell time (2), describe daily routines (2), talk about family members (4), their professions (4), where they work (4), and how to say large numbers up to a million (4).

Students are expected to not only conduct mingle/match/short dialogue activities with each other, but also focus on writing short sentences correctly in Spanish related to their curriculum theme. Second graders had to interview their classamtes (completely in Spanish ¡claro!), record at what time they did certain things, and then compare their schedules.

Fourth graders had the chance to show off their knowledge of job and workplace vocabulary, the verb ser (to be) and the verb trabajar (to work) by making their very own crossword puzzles to exchange with classmates. Here's a sample clue they wrote on their crosswords:

Can you figure out who that is? Fourth graders can! We also learned how to convert millas (miles) into kilómetros (kilometers) and are studying modes of transportation.

For doing such a great job with classroom behavior, second graders received a celebration day. Some classes voted to make quesedillas, while others voted for a piñata. Every class had a great time celebrating....congrats second grade!

Mmmmmmm...licuados

After learning about food, nutritional groups, and how to express our culinary likes/dislikes in the target language, third graders worked in small groups to deliver a cooking show...all in Spanish! Since most students are already familiar with tacos, quesadillas, churros, empanadas, etc. we explored another aspect of the Latin American and Spanish diet: licuados. A licuado (or batido) is kind of like our American smoothie. But it usually has more of a milk base (instead of juice) and can include nuts, honey, and even granola.

Students were videotaped and explained to the viewer in what order to cut (corta), put (pon), and add (añade) fruit and milk to the blender (licuadora). Although uvas were popular, most of the licuados included a mixture of duraznos, fresas, and plátanos along with leche.
Everyone did a fantastic job, and I'm sure they'll be making many more licaudos at home with their families.

Today in class, first graders worked on finishing their "Te presento a familia" mini-books. They enjoyed expressing in Spanish how many people are in their family (Yo tengo 6 personas en mi familia), who is who in the drawings (éste es mi madre..) and what their names are (se llama...). We hope to read our books to some Upper School Spanish students sometime soon!

Happy new year!

To mark the beginning of 2011, students celebrated like Spaniards! On New Year's Eve, families and friends in Spain eat twelve grapes (doce uvas) for good luck (buena suerte) when the clock strikes midnight. We watched a few YouTube videos of the event and made a list of the similarities and differences between American New Year's Eve celebrations and those in Spain. Students came up with the following observations, comparisons and contrasts regarding this night:

Los Estados Unidos
-don't eat grapes
-don't really have a special food to eat that night
-drink champagne

-stay up late
-people go outside to big spaces like Times Square
-parties
-watch the clock or a ball drop and countdown

España
-eat 12 grapes
-eat a grape every time the clock strikes
-it's hard to chew and eat them all in one minute
-grapes can come in a bag or even in a little metal can
-drink champagne and maybe other drinks

Fourth graders then communicated what their resolutions (propósitos) are for 2011 by color coding their own bunch of grapes. We hope to follow through with those propósitos as the year continues as we learn how to describe who is in our family (1st grade), tell time and describe our daily routines (2nd grade), express our food and nutritional group likes/dislikes and act in a Spanish cooking show (3rd grade) and describe our family members' professions and where they work (4th grade).

In conjunction with our shape and color studies, PK students have been learning about Pablo Picasso and his cubist style, CUBISMO. Here are some examples we looked at on a power point. ¡Somos piratas! - We are pirates!

¿Qué necesita una pirata? (What does every pirate need?) When I asked second graders, they decided that in addition to ships, swords, and funny hats, every pirate needs a treasure map! This was one of our contexts for learning about geographical features, cardinal directions, and describing how to get somewhere on a map. Students designed their own maps, hid their tesoro (treasure), and then had to describe to a fellow pirata how to get around obstacles and get to the loot. Student communicated with instructions such as ve al norte, or ve al sur (go to the north, go to the south). We eventually moved into learning the specific geography of Mexico, and making pop-up maps. Students utilized the verb "estar" (to be located) and cardinal direction vocabulary to describe the layout of Mexico. They are able to understand and answer the following questions in Spanish: Where are the mountains? Where is the capital? Where is the desert?

First graders in 1A and 1C have started a new thematic unit: La escuela. We are learning how to identify people in our school, call them by the appropriate title (Señor, Señorita, Señora), and describe who they are and what they teach. Also, in celebration of outdoor week, we completed a nature scavenger hunt. Students found many hojas, palitos, y piedras (leaves, sticks, and stones) and even the elusive marquita (ladybug)! Sadly, no one could find any gusanos, but everyone had fun tallying how many objects they had, what they needed, and then describing those amounts to other groups in the class utilizing the verbs "tener" and "necesitar".

First graders had OUTDOOR week in their home classrooms so Spanish decided to go outdoors as well and participate in "Una Búsqueda de Naturaleza", a nature hunt. Students reviewed the list and tried to find all items all the while being introduced to new vocabulary related to nature. After teams found what they could, the next day we graphed the items we had found and reported things we still needed. Again using the new vocabulary and applying them to the verbs we have been working with more recently in our community unit, 'tener' and 'necesitar', to have and to need.

¡Hola! I am Caitlin Cummings, the new Lower School Spanish teacher. I am so glad to be joining the Columbus Academy community and feel very fortunate that in my position, I get to interact with so many students in the Lower School.

We've had a lot of fun so far. Just as I have spent these first weeks introducing myself to the students, the 1st-4th graders in all my classes have been working on presenting themselves and their interests to me and fellow classmates in Spanish. We have also moved into our first thematic units. First grade has been working on presenting the calendar, learning classroom vocabulary, and being able to express what they have (yo tengo...) and what they need (yo necesito...) Second and Third grade have focused on discussing clothing preferences, what to pack for a trip according to weather (yo llevo una chaqueta cuando hace viento...), and how to describe to someone the location of things on a map. Third and Fourth grade have also learned about countries in Las américas: describing what is on their flags, as well as famous athletes from each country and what sports they like to play. Stay tuned for more updates as we move into our second full month here at Academy!

In conjunction with the first grade theme of community, first graders have been learning vocabulary and language that will help them within the school community and classroom. We have been working with the verb ' tener' to have and also with 'necesitar' to need. In this activity students were given a list of items to purchase for school and a stack of one school item in their 'cart' (envelope) to give to those who needed it. Then students were asked to circulate around the room requesting these items from peers. First expressing what they needed and then asking if their classmate had the items so that they may collect them and cross them off their list. It was quite impressive to see students completing the task so quickly and keeping the communication in Spanish. ¡Fantástico trabajo!

Kindergarten spanish students continue to work within the theme of 'Yo', all about me. Today we graphed how old we are. Students were asked to respond to the question, ¿Cuántos años tienes?. Tengo ____ años. We found that most of us were either 5 or 6 and that Sra. Robeano was definitely not! Although some of my students were kind enough to say I was still in my twenties. ¡Gracias!

La Rutina: First Grade begins our Routine

First graders begin the year reviewing conversation and calendar. Everyday one student is chosen to act as though they were a newscaster from our own CA Telemundo television station. The student must use an appropriate greeting, introduce themselves and tell us the day, date, weather and season. As we go through the year we will be adding to what they are to present. Thank you Sydney for being the first. I will be sure to update and add with more video clips of this routine. But here's a great start!

First Graders are also starting the year within the theme of community, specifically the school community. Classroom object vocabulary was introduced in this activity where students were asked to unscramble the letters in the sealed bottles to discover new vocabulary. We will be utilizing this vocabulary all year long with the verbs to have and to need, which will be very helpful in maintaining the lessons and class activities in Spanish and addressing the needs of the students.

Kindergarten and Pre-K classes have begun and I like to begin the year with some review and conversation. We have been working with the basic greetings and responding to how are you. Students are encouraged to use the following vocabulary and expressions.

Students have also been working to review color words. In both Pre-K and Kindergarten we have been playing a game called ¿Has visto mi monito?, have you seen my monkey. A tiny monkey is hidden behind different color trees. Students guess eachclass where the monkey is hidden to utilize those color words. When the monkey is found we practice our cheer, ¡A la bim...a la bau..a la bim bom bau ra ra rrraaa!

Kindergarten students have also begun working with graphs. This first one graphing, our favorite colors. Students were then introduced to concepts of más / menos, more than and less than and also practicing numbers to count and answer questions about the information on the graph.

Kindergarten also read 'Oso pardo, Oso pardo, ¿Qué ves ahí?, Brown Bear What do you see?, by Eric Carle. In this story K Spanish students review colors and also are introduced to some animal vocabulary. Later students were asked to color their own story books of brown bear to test their comprehension and ability to identify the colors correctly.

Second graders and fourth graders gathered in the spanish room today for their last class. We made pupusas a tasty cheese and chicken corn meal pocket from El Salvador. Students enjoyed a short video and song about the foods and culture of El Salvador on the Smartboard and then participated in making pupusas. Students followed directions in Spanish to make a delicious snack. A great way to end the year together.

First Grade Piñatas

It has been the last three years that I have made piñatas with First grade to end the school year. Each year the ideas the first graders have come up with have been incredible. This year the students decided on an eyeball, a sumo wrestler ( integrating with their Japan unit), a Mario head and an elephant. Each class took a vote to decide and then we began brainstorming ideas for how to go about the actual construction. Using paper mache, a large balloon and fingers crossed we would began our project.

The day had finally come for salsa! All of our ingredient plants sprouted in the 'Jardín de Salsa' and in celebration we made fresh salsa. Students reviewed the ingredients, utilizing vocabulary and expressions to classify fruits and veggies. Then students learned three 'action' words in order to follow the steps of our recipe in Spanish. Students followed along on the smartboard and were able to chop with a partner and mix what they chopped in to the bowl. We then ate our fresh salsa with tortilla chips. ¡Que diversión!

First graders continue to learn the Spanish alphabet and the sounds that correspond with each Spanish letter. Today students tried to stump Sra. in the 'Adivina...letras ciegas' game. Students were asked to identify Spanish letters by using their fingers only to feel their way thru and identify the letter. If identified correctly, students earned a point. Sra. also had the opportunity to earn points.

Second Graders write their own Stories

Second grade completed a unit using TPRS, a method of teaching that introduces vocabulary using TPR, total physical response. Students used thier bodies to act out verbs, adjectives and nouns that allowing them to create sentences and link them to create short stories. Excellent job by all! The illustration and scenarios these students created were incredibly creative and enjoyed by all.

After reading "La Semilla de Zanahoria", the Carrot Seed, students were asked to predict which salsa plant would sprout first and out their prediction on the graph. It was inetersting to see them choose the tomato plant over the others. I attribute this to the fact that it is the only plant that is a cognate in Spanish. 'Tomate' is much easier than 'cebolla' or 'jalapeño' for a Kindergarteners to say. We will see...

K continues to look after our four ingredients plants for our salsa garden. Each day students elect a 'jardinero (a)' to water and spot sprouts. Students have learned how to report in Spanish. ¡Vayan Bananas!

First graders earn bananas for good behavior and choices during Spanish class. Once five bananas are earned, First graders choose what they would like to do as an incentive and Vaya Bananas, Go bananas! Usually we watch a movie in Spanish or hit a pinata, however, Mr. Connick's class elected to do an activity with the Upper School Spanish students. Mr. Connick's class participated in a clue hunt, Busqueda de Pistas, where they were to follow the clues to collect all 7 clues to earn a prize. On each clue students read descriptions of members of our CA then once they figured out who was described, proceeded to that person's office or classroom to collect their next clue. It was a blast to see the learning spectrum. Thank you Sra. Chavez.

Second graders were asked to illustrate their daily routines in a comic strip- like project where they were to write what they do and at what time they do the activity. Then later students shared these projects orally. Students were given a choice board to decide how they would like to share these projects. Idolo Latino auditions announced!

Idolo Latino auditions will be held on Tuesday, November 11Th for grades K-2 and Tuesday, November 18Th 3&4. Idolo Latino is an event not a singing competition or musical talent show. It is a opportunity for students to demonstrate and share their skills, creativity and knowledge in the target language. A huge GRACIAS to the parents who helped mold the sugar skulls so that 2nd graders could participate in decorating them for "el Dia de los Muertos. Students used royal icing and colored sugar with sequins to decorate their sugar skulls! So much fun!

Students participate in activities related to El Dia de los Muertos, a holiday observed in some Spanish speaking countries and areas of the United States that begins on our Halloween. Students made calavera necklaces (clay skull necklaces), papel picado ( a cut paper banner decoration), pan de muertos, Catrinas ( a famous character originally done by artist Jose Posada) , cempasúchil ( marigold paper folwers) and Calaveras de Azúcar ( sugar skulls).

We talked about some of the differences between communities in the U.S. compared to those in Spanish speaking countries. Second grade, as part of our study of Mexico, have been learning about the contributions of the ancient mexican civilization, the Mayas. We have written our names using the Mayan Glyphs or pictographs and have studied numbers 1-20 using the Mayan symbols representing one, five and zero. Students were even challenged to do a ' Minuto Loco' , a math exercise similar to the 22nd grade 'Mad Minute'. Check out the website below to learn more.

Kindergarteners have begun to learn about the farm! We are learning s ongs about the farm, telling stories and learning the animal vocabulary.

¿Quién vive en una granja? Who lives at the farm?
We have sorted the animals who live at the farm and the zoo to introduce some farm animal names in Spanish

¡Vengan a ver mi granja! Come to see my farm!
This song reinforces the animal vocabulary we learned during our sorting activity and introduces the sounds the animals make in Spanish. They are indeed different for some. Qui qui ri qui, for example, rather than the cock a doodle doo.

Cinco Patitos Five little Ducks
After reading this well known story about five little ducks who go out to play and return one duck less, students have been working to retell the story in rhyme, utilizing numbers 1-5, basic subtraction of one and action words like fueron de paseo, go out for a walk.

Students utilize the previously introduced expression, Me gusta, to share which farm animal they like the best and add to the class graph. We also reviewed the concepts of más / menos, more than and less than and also ¿Cuántos hay?, how many are there? to examine our class graph.

Second graders are sending to Angangeo a little movie and care package of our favorite candies. In each video clip students introduce themselves, tell what they like to do and their favorite candy that they are adding to the jar we are sending to the schools in Angangeo with Mrs. Griffin. Kindergarteners worked with 'corazones dulces' today to sort colors and talk about how many of each color they had in their box. Kindergarteners used complete sentences to share. 'Tengo seis rosados' I have six pink ones. Kindergarteners also got to see what expressions and words were used on the Spanish conversation hearts to send Valentine wishes. ¡Increíble!

First & Second Graders Prepare to Shop

This week First and Second graders will participate in the annual Market Day with Fourth and Third graders. Fourth graders, in connection with their study of business, have created and marketed products to sell in an open-air market style business day. First and Second graders have been earning Euros in class through good participation and risk taking. We have reviewed numbers 1-the thousands and prepared to barter low prices with expressions and dialogue typically used in an open air market. I am so proud of all my students in keeping with the LS CARES program, demonstrating responsible behavior in keeping their money safe and bartering respectfully in the target language.

Spanish Club members met this past week to enjoy some festive ' buñelos' for snack and make 'Ojos de Dios', a Mexican and Bolivian weaving craft thought to bring good luck and watch over those who adorn them. Spanish Club members also joined in to sing' Feliz Navidad' ' Feliz Januka' and 'Felices Fiestas', a great way to wish each other in Spanish a happy holiday season. We also welcomed two new Pre-K members to our club, Nathan and Jared! ¡Bienvenidos Niños!

Sra. Robeano was fortunae enough to attend the ACTFL, the Association for the teaching of Foreign Language, Conference in San Antonio and purchased some new materials and software for our classes. Here students participated in a dance and song from Edurock, a cd projected onto the smartboard to learn body parts. Students also reviewed other software to help integrate more technology into our lessons to encourage and motivate students to participate.

We also created these 'calacas' , skeletons, dressed as bakers, teachers, athletes, football players, etc. These skeletons, much like the real 'calacas' , are meant to be funny and remind us that the Day of the Dead is a day of celebration and not of sadness.

What are you wearing?

Second graders continue to prepare for travel. As we prepare to pack our suitcases, second graders needed an introduction to the items they might pack if traveling. In this activity students needed to find each item of clothing worn by their classmates on their 'búsqueda'. They mingled around the room asking ¿Qué llevas?, what are you wearing?. Students chose an item brought in by Sra. Robeano to wear and needed to tell their classmates, when approached, the item they were wearing. Students quicky filled out their lists and had fun wearing some items they would not otherwise chose to wear during class.

First graders have been working with introducing members of our school community and talking about what they do. We have just completed our Guess Who books by writing clues about the people in our school and asking ¿Quién es? This project was the first time our First graders were asked to write in Spanish and try out new sound symbols and Spanish punctuation, the upside down question mark and accents. ¡Excelente trabajo estudiantes!

These pics were taken during our balloon activity where students constructed sentences.The same sentences written as clues in our Guess Who books. Students needed to pop the balloon using their bodies to get the pieces of the sentence and put them together correctly to make a complete sentence about the people in out school community. Loud fun in the Spanish room!

After a long few weeks finishing up our itineraries we finally boarded our flight to Spain. To board the plane students were asked to answer a few questions regarding their flight, passports and itinerary. Then, 'Deanna' their friendly pilot and stewardess showed a video with the saftey precautions and flights updates. We also were able to enjoy an in flight 'merienda'

Second Graders finish their Itinerarios

Second graders used their knowledge of time and daily routines to create sentences and an itinerary for our next class trip and country study, Spain. Students created sentences to tell when they were to get up, eat breakfast, pack their suitcase, leave for the airport etc. based on the information on their plane tickets and boarding passes. Then students illustrataed these sentences using clock stamps and cartoons to create a comic strip-like poster. ¡Excelente trabajo niños!

Mi Itinerario: 2nd graders get ready to travel to Spain

Second graders have been working with time and daily routines. Earlier in the year we began our travels in Mexico, we now are getting ready to visit Spain. However before we leave, students will need to write an itinerary so that they will board their flight on time. Each student recieved a plane ticket that they needed to read and interpret so that they could develop an appropriate intinerary. Student needed to think about the information on their ticket and write at what time they should get up, what time they should leave for the airport to make the flight on time. Students will later illustrate their itineraries and answer questions regarding their schedules in order to board our flight. Students will also need to have their passports, created in the beginning of the year. Stay tuned for pictures from our flight.

Kindergarteners Graph Birthday Months

As we have been studying calendar skills in Spanish, Kindergarten participated in this activity to show the birthdays of all Kindergarten students using birthday candles. Students chose a candle to place on the graph and shared with the class their birthday month. Then we looked at which month has the most and least. Thank you to Mrs. F for having the 72 candles on hand for a quick Friday activity!
